Biography

Dr. Digambar Behera is a Senior Professor and was the Head of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, an autonomous Institute and Institute of National importance. He was also the Dean (Research) of the Institute. He was also Director of the LRS Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, now known as the National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, New Delhi, another autonomous Institute under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India for a period of 51/2 years. Dr Behera is an acclaimed Respiratory Physician par excellence, teacher, and researcher of National and International repute, a social worker and has distinguished with exceptional achievements and contributions of innovative nature in the field of Medicine (Respiratory) and has rendered immense service to the public at large and the poor in particular. He is one of the pioneers to start DM super-specialty course in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine for the first time in the country in 1989. More than 60 of his students are spread in the country and abroad. He heads a State of the Art Department and specialty, which is a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research & Capacity Building in Chronic Respiratory Diseases. He has led to develop newer investigative procedures like Endobronchial Ultrasound, Medical Thoracoscopy, Stenting. The Department under his guidance is doing maximum number of procedures in an innovative way like radial EBUS, Cryobiopsy. His team has developed guidelines for managing chronic respiratory diseases like COPD and asthma in a resource limited setting, particularly diagnosis and cost-effective treatment and training grass root physicians in handling such cases. He has over 536 scientific publications with 4100 citations with h index of 34 and i10 index of 112. This is exceptionally outstanding academic achievements at any standard. He has authored a Text book of Pulmonary medicine (2 editions), editor-in-Chief of a Text book of Respiratory Medicine. Other books authored by him are Tuberculosis, Bronchial Asthma, lung Cancer and has contributed 42 chapters to various books. His work has been recognized in the form of 28 National and 7 International awards.
